Description : This subject, representing the wife of the aboriginal Ainu patriarch, was painted from life during a trip to Hokkaido. When translated from watercolor to woodblocks, they took on a dignified luminescence that makes them worthy of comparison with the best of Sharaku. Note the brilliant slate-grey mica background and bronze mica on her earrings. Miles, Richard "The Prints of Paul Jacoulet" p.35, p.113. Stamped 53/350 in red ink on the back of the print.
