Description : From album "Ezo Nijuikkei" ("Twenty-one Views of Ezo"). Ezo is the old name of Hokkaido, the northern island of Japan. "Funen no Showa Shinzan" : After some earthquakes and rumblings of Mt. Usu, a flat wheat field near the volcano started to rise gradually to 290 meters in height between 1943 and 1945. Since the changes occurred during World War II, there was no official record of this strange growth. The local postmaster, Masao Mimatsu, who noticed the change and became curious. He placed a piece of paper on his window and traced the profile of the dome at different times as it grew. The new mountain is now 408 meters in height still spewing smoke.
