Description : Sunday, 6 January 2008 Framed watercolor of boats in water by well-known Japanese colorist Ikoi Bunsai ("Bunya"). Beautifully executed in a fine western style (Bunsai's trademark). Soft colors. Good detail. Image size is 7" x 9". Double matted and elegantly framed. Bunsai was born in Mito at the end of the Tokugawa shogunate as the son of a samurai from the Mito clan, and he worked in Tokyo. He is well known among foreigner art lovers as a leading Japanese watercolorist who left a body of pioneering botanical art. He also mentored the famous artist Hoan Kosugi. Bunsai's body of work includes oil portraits, botanicals and scenes of Nikko Toshogu shrine, the mausoleum of shogun Ieyasu Tokugawa. Condition of painting is very good (vertical white lines in second and fourth photos are due to reflection in glass). Mat is vintage and age-tanned. Professionally framed (recent).
