Description : Wednesday, 2 November 2005 Shin Hanga: Bijin with Drum Artist: Keigetsu Kikuchi Format: Dai oban tate-e: 20" x 14.75" Subject: A double sized portrait of a young bijin seated before two ehon, playing a hand drum. A scarce design by the artist Keigetsu Kikuchi 1879-1955, who was born in Nagano prefecture with the given name Kikuchi Kanji. He traveled in Europe during the twenties with two of his art colleagues. Back in Japan he became a teacher of Japanese print art at the Kyoto City School of Fine Arts and Crafts and at the Kyoto City School of Painting. His favorite subjects were Bijin-ga - images of beautiful women. In 1934 he was honored by being appointed a member of the Imperial Art Board and in 1937 as a member of the Imperial Art Academy. Date: c.1920s Condition: Full size. A horizontal centerfold (professionally restored). Thin Japanese backing paper. Minor marks and flaws. Generally good state of preservation. Colour: Fine Impression: Fine Other Notes: Please note that due to the large size of this print, our image has been scanned in two halves and stitched together.
