Description : Shin Hanga: Female Samurai Ghost Artist: Shima Seien Format: Dai Oban tate-e: 18" x 11.25" Subject: In the snow the magnificent design of a female ghost holding the sword with which she had disembowled herself. Seien is best known for this superb design and another from the same set 'The Departed Spirit of a Courtesan'.The woman artist, Shima Narie, was born in Sakai, in Osaka prefecture; eventually her family settled in Osaka. Narie's early period of study was entirely selfmotivated, and at the age of eighteen she first displayed her work in the sixth Bunten exhibition. At this show she received an honorable mention, certainly an accolade for a young woman artist during this time. Therafter she seriously embarked on a career as a painter, studying under the Nihonga artists Kitano Tsunetomi and Noda Kyuho. Publisher: Hand-printed by Nishimura Kumakichi Date: c. 1923 Condition: Full size with large margins (not fully shown in scanned image). Minor marks and creases. Generally fine state of preservation. Impression: Fine impression with gauffrage, gold pigment and hand-applied gofun for the snow.
