Description : 'Street lamp by a bridge' Painted by M.Matsu in c1920s/30s A wonderfully evocative and beguiling painting, I think it is night turning into day with hope conveyed though subtle use of colour, we are leaving the dense, dark glade in the backround behind and heralding the dawn in the foreground with shades of peach and delightful delicate blossom. The street lamp will go off at any second and one feels an early morning jogger might appear at any moment. Matsu was a prolific Pre war Japanese Artist, famed mainly for his watercolours and famed inclusion of electric light ie from street lamps and light from windows shining out onto the streets etc. Sadly little is known of the Pre war Japanese water coulourists in general as woodcut and silk painting was the main medium however it is an area within the market that is growing as it captures a more immediate realist approach lacking in the wonderful yet often static or more contrived wood cut prints. The painting is in excellent condition with no warping spotting, thunderflies etc It sits in a pleasant mount and frame which is in very good condition
