Description : Images of the Thirteen Buddhas were displayed during a seven-week mourning period after a peson’s death, and again during annual memorial services heldthree years after his death. This practice appears to have spread during the Muromachi period (1392-1573 AD) in Japan. While the precise origin of the worship of the Thirteen Buddhas is unclear, it may have begun under the influence of the Esoteric Shingon sect. (from Pathway exhibition 1/29/08-)
