Description : The Preparatory Drawing: The artist provided the publisher with a preparatory sketch of the design, called a shita-e or gakö-e (preparatory picture). The preparatory drawing for Young Woman with Iris was developed to a high degree of finish, first blocked out in graphite, made graphic by copying the lines in black ink and made vivid by the additions of watercolor, printed color, and colored pencil. Contrasted with the high degree of completion is the coarseness of the execution of the design and the fact that the drawing was made on a roughly textured support. - “Prelude to the print” curated by Wendy Bennett 11/7/2007 - 1/20/2008
