Description : The boy is holding a carp in front of him. Carp are traditionally symbols of success, an idea that was introduced from China. They are believed to swim up the waterfall of the Yellow River in China. May 5th is Boys' Day, which is also known as kodomo no hi, or Chiildrens' Day. It is a national Japanese holiday celebrating children, specifically male children. Therefore, this doll might be displayed during this time. (from “Doll! Doll! Doll! / Kawase Hasui” exhibition, 2/14/2003-)
