Description : Thursday, 19 February 2009 KIYOCHIKA KOBAYASHI Crossing a Bridge at Night, Tokyo -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: c. 1920s; published by the Shima Art Company with publisher's seal at the lower left corner below Kiyochika's signature Size: chuban, approx. 7.5" x 10.125" Condition: VG, uncirculated print, never framed; "Made in Japan" is stamped in the bottom margin on verso, minor surface flaws Impression: Fine, tight registration and solid keylines Color: Fine, deep saturated color and bleed through to verso Provenance: from the Robert O. Muller estate (see below for more info) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I have seen this Shima Art Company print by Kobayashi Kiyochika titled as Crossing a Country Bridge, but if one looks at the design it is clearly not a country scene, but rather an urban scene showing a bridge over a canal near one of Tokyo's rivers. In any case it is a fine design. Shima Art Company was a publisher of prints, and also a distributor of original prints produced by other publishers. Shima, which was established in 1908, generally contracted with companies in Japan to oversee the carving and printing of their publications. A red Shima seal, like the one at the right of the print, was printed within the image below the signature of the attributed artist.
