Description : Mount Haruna is the general term for several peaks. Together they form one of the three largest mountains in Jöshü (present-day Gumma prefecture). On the summit are Haruna Fuji (4,562 feet), the central cone, which is seen in the background, and Lake Haruna, a crater lake, its outflow seen in the tumbling waves in the foreground. Bizarre rock formations and precipitous peaks make a contrast against the round mass of Haruna Fuji. At the left, a family of tourists pauses for a moment, and two more travelers approach the site. The pink sky is striking against the predominantly blue color of the print. (Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, “Hokusai and Hiroshige”, 1998)
