Description : "Hakkone" from the series "53 Stations of the Tokaido". Hakone (# 11) was the roughest part of the Tokaido, an ancient highway system of 496 kilometers connecting Edo with Kyoto, an important commercial center and residence of the Japanese empire. At Hakone a steep mountain pass had to be surpassed. The stations were some kind of rest areas with guesthouses for the night and simple restaurants. The series "53 Stations of the Tokaido" made Hiroshige famous. Many follow-up series should follow, but none surpassed the original one. This image is considered one of the masterworks by Ando Hiroshige and one of the best known images in the world of art.
