Description : 8 Prints Forming Complete Set of Toto Yukimi Hakkei Artist: Hiroshige I Format: Oban yoko-e: each sheet: 10" x 15.5" Subject: This set of 8 snow scenes in the Eastern Capital was published in 1928 by Shotaro Sato of Kyoto. The original black and white drawings were apparently exported to Europe and ended up in the hands of a distinguished French judge and collector M. Emile Javal. Mr. Sato paid a visit to M. Javal in 1927 and obtained permission to print the set. Having procured craftsmen considered to be the best at that time, the block-cutter, Yujiro Maeda and the printer, Gasen Oiwa, he set about the task. The original drawings bore a censorship mark, a nanushi (ward headman's) seal Fukatsu who is recorded to have worked between 1840 to 1847. Therefore it seems evident that their publication was intended and had been approved. The drawings are thought to have been executed in the period between the last two years of Tempo to the end of Koka (1842-1847). Publisher: Sato Shotaro Date: Showa 3 (1928) Condition: Fine colors. Full size. Each print with areas of glue residue at superior corners on verso. All very fine state of preservation. Impression: Very fine impressions, drawn from the first limited edition of 100 complete sets. Later, poorly printed, examples are encountered lacking the blue seals in the right margin.
