Description : Kitao Shigemasa worked mainly in the field of book illustration, and so his nishiki-e or single sheet multi-colored prints are few in number. In his images of beautiful women, there are many superb works depicting geisha from the An’ei through the Tenmei eras(1781-1789). This print shows a geisha walking through town followed by a servant who carries her samisen. Both of them have their hair styled in the torobin fashion, a hairstyle popular during the end of the An’ei era. (Tadashi Kobayashi, “Edo Beauties in Ukiyo-e”, 1994)
