Date: 1952
Description: Saturday, 5 November 2005 The title of this print is Moon over Isura (Izura no tsuki) and the date of publication is 1952. It was published by Watanabe and has a 6 mm red Watanabe seal. The 6 mm seal indicates that the piece was printed before Hasui death in 1957. This is thus an original edition (Original Watanabe prints published after the war and before 1957 have a 6 mm seal red or black seal.) You should be aware that of the Hasui prints sold on ebay very, very few are original edition prints. Izura is in Ibaraki prefecture, which is about 1 1/2 hours by train north of Tokyo. The coastline in this area which faces the Pacific Ocean is know for its picturesque scenery This print is a wonderful example of Hasui?s art. We see in the foreground a slightly derelict structure on a craggy cliff overlooking the open sea and in the near distance a boat with a lone rower. Pine trees frame the scene and all is illuminated by the newly risen full moon. As in the best of Hasui prints the scene conveys a tranquil atmosphere but has a sense of mystery and pathos. Condition: There is a tape burn on the upper margin (as seen in the images). There is a vertical crease that is barely noticeable. Other than the conditions noted the piece is in perfect condition. The colors are rich and vibrant. It is all together a terrific work COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: japan DATE: 1952 MATERIAL: woodblock print SIZE: 10 1/2″ x 15 1/2″ (26.8 39.4 cm)
