Ishö Ningyö (Costume Doll)

Name: Ishö Ningyö (Costume Doll)
Date: c. 1930
Source: Honolulu Museum of Art
Description: In 1930, the Toledo Museum in Ohio had an exhibition of contemporary Japanese prints. At this show, 92 of Hasui’s prints were exhibited. He became a well-known Japanese artist even in the West. This set of doll prints was specifically produced as imports for Western customers. It is assumed from this production that the demand for Hasui’s prints was extremely high during the 1930s. (from “Doll! Doll! Doll! / Kawase Hasui” exhibition, 2/14/2003-)
