Description: Rare Pre-Earthquake Hasui (1922) Kyoto Daigokuden (Heian Shrine) with Original Pre-Kanto Earthquake Seal You are bidding on a rare Pre-earthquake woodblock print by Hasui, entitled Kyoto Daigokuden (Heian Shrine), from the Selected Japanese Landscapes Series (Nihon fukei senshu). It bears the 1922-1923 Kawase Seal, Hasui signature and was published by Watanabe Shozaburo. It is numbered in Japanese on verso 57/300. Very good impression, color and condition. Dimension: Oban tate-e, 30.1 x 22.3 cm. The blocks for this rare print were destroyed in the 1923 Kanto earthquake and it has never been reprinted: On Sept 1, 1923, Japan was hit by one of the worst earthquakes in history, known as the Kanto earthquake with the epicentrum in the Tokyo/Yokohama area. Watanabe’s print shop and all of Kawase’s print blocks were destroyed by the resulting fire. The home of the artist and his sketchbooks were also destroyed.
