Description: This boy with a courtly hat is holding a chicken on his shoulder. Chicken fighting was a popular gambling game at the southern court of the imperial palace. Since the Heian period (794-1185), chicken fighting has been held on March 3rd, according to the lunar calendar. Later, the popularity of this game spread to common citizens as well. (from “Doll!
