Description : Monday, 5 November 2007 Oban Hexaptych: The Last Stand of the Kusunoki Clan Artist: Kuniyoshi Format: Oban hexaptych - six sheets: each print 14" x 9.5" approx Subject: Shijo Nawate nite… 'The Last Stand of the Kusunoki Clan' at the battle of Shijo nawate'. A famous and rare long format (double triptych). Kuniyoshi portrays the desperate heroism of the Clan against all odds in the heat of battle where they were anahilated. It is interesting to note that this stunning design was produced in two stages. The right-hand triptych is dated Snake 4, 1857 and the left-hand triptych is dated Snake 8, 1857. Publisher: Soto Date: 4/8th month 1857 Condition: Slight trimming. Minor marks and flaws. A small repaired hole in the right-hand sheet. Generally very good state. Colour: Fine Impression: Very good impression with carefully graded bokashi and gauffrage. Strong woodgrain visible in background.
